A cast member’s pro-transgender message during a special Pride Month performance of Disney’s Frozen in London, has sparked a debate over political messaging in family shows…
A recent performance of Disney’s Frozen at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London faced backlash after a cast member displayed a pro-transgender placard at the end of the show. The incident took place during a special performance celebrating Pride Month. The male cast member held a sign reading “Protect Trans Youth With Your Vote” and waved LGBTQ+ bunting, including the transgender flag.
Critics, including Tory candidate Miriam Cates, expressed concern about the appropriateness of the message in a family show with many children in the audience. Cates commented on the potential harm of exposing children to what she described as “harmful ideology.” NHS GP Dr. Renee Hoenderkamp called for a boycott of the show.
Helen Joyce from the human rights charity Sex Matters also criticized the act, arguing that using the performance for political purposes was inappropriate. She emphasized that Pride should not be linked to election campaigns and expressed concern about the influence of such messages on young, vulnerable audiences.
A spokesperson for Frozen the Musical stated that the cast member’s actions were personal and reiterated that the goal of their productions is to remain welcoming and free from personal views.
